Interview: Family Taco Night with McCormick & JoAnna Garcia Swisher
Since October 10, McCormick has hosted 'After School Tac'over' events with Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) in New York, Los Angeles, and Baltimore.
Note: I was invited as media to the event. However, any views expressed are always 100% my own.
For the NYC event, I met and interviewed JoAnna Garcia Swisher, actress and celebrity mom.
I learned about the partnership and how families can relax and bond, while having a Taco Night with McCormick Seasoning.
Partnership with McCormick
JoAnna Garcia Swisher: I enjoy cooking with my family and the kitchen is the heart of our home. Plus taco nights are very popular in my house. So it's great that I can partner with McCormick, that is a part of our daily life.
Also Big Brothers, Big Sisters of America for such a great event and be able to connect with families and send them away with the taco kit, so they can have to taco night at home.
JoAnna Garcia Swisher: I always say, it doesn't take a lot of time and money to really create those incredible family moments. Just to have those that time to connect, a lot of that happens around our dinner table.
So to be able to do something that celebrates that, is really exciting for me.
Favorite Taco Toppings
JoAnna Garcia Swisher: I do like a little bit of raw onion and lime. I like to keep it really really simple. I love fresh avocado and the crunch of lettuce. But, i will generally kind of put out all of the toppings, so everyone in my family is happy.
Tips for Family Quality Time
JoAnna Garcia Swisher: We all have a lot on our plate, work and after school commitments and wanting to do what's best for our families. So I find taking a little time on the weekends to meal plan and prep has really helped me.
So for me, it's all about knowing that I can grab something easy out of the fridge and throw on the table. I couldn't be a bigger fan of a 15 minute meal.
Self-Care Moments
JoAnna Garcia Swisher: You know, that's sometimes not the easiest thing for me, it's something i really have to remind myself to do and prioritize, and give myself the permission to just take a break.
We're pretty amazing the way that we can multitask, and do all of that stuff, but it does take its toll.
I've also really try to get better sleep, prioritizing my sleep. Because I do find that without that, I'm toast.
My Own Taco Night
After the event, I was gifted a Taco Night Kit filled with fresh ingredients, which I immediately used.
After cutting up my toppings, cooking the meat with McCormick® Original Taco Seasoning Mix, and warming up my Tortillas, dinner was ready! And so delicious.
"It Takes Little to Be Big Campaign
The McCormick 'After School Tac'over' events align with the recent launch of Big Brothers Big Sisters's campaign, "It Takes Little to Be Big," which challenges the myths and shifts perceptions of mentoring and why now, more than ever, mentorship is critical to young people's success.
The campaign aims to engage and galvanize one million volunteers ("Bigs"), alumni, supporters, influencers, and strategic partners to highlight the little mentorship moments that inspire potential and bridge the gap between people and possibility.
McCormick 'After School Tac'over' Events
At each 'After School Tac'over' event, the McCormick brand and Big Brothers Big Sisters will invite families to get together for an afternoon of activities, including interactive floor to ceiling taco-themed coloring books, giant yard games, and more.
Parents are not the only ones going home with a special gift, McCormick is also giving kids a taco-themed set of school supplies to prepare them for a successful year!
As part of the celebration, JoAnna Garcia Swisher will share how she uses McCormick® Original Taco Seasoning Mix, not just for taco night, but for snacks, back-to-school lunch ideas and trending recipes.
Some taco-inspired favorites include:
- Breakfast - Baked Eggs and Sweet Potato Hash
- Back to school lunch and snack ideas - Taco Snack Mix, Walking tacos, 7 Layer Dip
