How to Stay Hydrated for Academic Edge

By 8/28/2024 04:09:00 PM ,

For families getting ready for back-to-school, there’s more to prep than just gathering school supplies. A hydration plan should also be a priority on a student’s checklist.

Staying hydrated is not just about quenching thirst; it’s a secret weapon for academic success, helping students stay sharp, focused, and energized for the school year.

To help families keep their kids hydrated for education, I'm sharing these tips from Family Physician Dr. Bernadette Anderson on the importance of hydration for academic success and overall well-being.

Make Water Fun

Encourage your kids to drink more water by making it fun. Use colorful, child-friendly water bottles or cups with their favorite characters. You can also get creative by using silly straws or letting them pick out a new water bottle.

Infuse Water with Flavor

If your child isn’t a fan of plain water, try adding natural flavors. Slices of fruit like oranges, lemons, strawberries, or a handful of fresh mint can make water more appealing without adding sugar.

Incorporate Hydrating Snacks

Offer snacks that have a high water content, such as watermelon, cucumbers, oranges, and grapes. These not only help with hydration but also provide essential vitamins and nutrients.

Set a Hydration Routine

Establish a routine where your child drinks water at specific times of the day—first thing in the morning, with each meal, during snack time, and before bed. Having a routine makes it easier to ensure they’re getting enough fluids.

Lead by Example

Kids often mimic their parents’ behavior, so make sure you’re drinking plenty of water throughout the day as well. Show them that staying hydrated is important by keeping a water bottle with you and sipping from it regularly.

Pack Water for School

When packing your child’s lunch, include a reusable water bottle filled with water. Make sure it’s easy to open and refill, and remind them to drink throughout the day.

Offer Water First

When your child says they’re thirsty, offer water before any other drinks. This reinforces the habit of reaching for water first.

Monitor Activity Levels

If your child is active in sports or plays outside frequently, make sure they drink water before, during, and after physical activity. Encourage them to take regular water breaks to stay hydrated, especially in hot weather.

Limit Sugary and Caffeinated Beverages

Reduce the intake of sugary drinks, such as sodas and fruit juices, which can contribute to dehydration. Opt for water or milk as the primary drink choices for your child.

Make Hydration Part of the Morning Routine

Start the day with a glass of water, even before breakfast. This can help set a good tone for the rest of the day and remind them of the importance of hydration.

Keep Water Accessible

Have water readily available at all times.
